On Saturday June 24th, Near North Health will host a Men’s Health Fair pop-up event at Chicago Kedzie Plaza – located in the NW Chicago neighborhood of Humboldt Park. In honor of International Men’s Health Month in June, Near North Health has dedicated the month to hosting multiple weekend events that encourage men and boys to take their health and wellness into their own hands and that raise awareness for diseases and ailments which commonly afflict men. This pop-up health event intends to give men a convenient and uncomplicated way of getting a health check-up, however, check-ups are just the tip of the iceberg at this one-stop-shop health fair.
In addition to health check-ups and screenings, this event will also offer several other complimentary activities which include haircuts, food demonstrations, nutrition advice for a low grocery budget, games, and various other forms of entertainment. Furthermore, Near North will provide t-shirts, food, and refreshments – all of which are free! The purpose of this event is to serve as a one-stop-shop where men can take a more active role in their health and enjoy a myriad of other fun and educational activities while at this fair.
Since 1994, Near North Health has hosted similar men’s health events in June, though this is the first month-long and city-wide campaign. Over the decades since its initial conception, Near North Health has assisted thousands of men in their health journey, and, not infrequently, the organization has identified life-threatening conditions while at these fairs. Statistically speaking, women tend to lead in the healthcare initiative by a significant amount. Nearly 80% of the individuals that seek medical help and book appointments are female. This health fair serves as a means of spurring men to close the gap and develop healthy practices and make appointments with healthcare professionals.
These essential health pop-ups serve as the only form of healthcare for many Chicagoans. A visit to this event means more than a general health check-up. It also means a free haircut, a meal, a shirt, and the chance to take your health back into your hands. Good news for those that are interested in this event but are unable to attend the Chicago Kedzie Fair – this event is not a one-time occurrence! It not only takes place each weekend in June at various locations across the city, but Near North Health intends to improve and expand this annual health fair each year. Near North Health also has nine physical facilities, plus two women & children’s health facilities, throughout the city. Each location offers an array of services, from early intervention to dental, and the team at Near North will even assist in helping patients arrange transportation to the clinic. Near North Health is comprehensive healthcare made easy, whether that is at the Men’s Health Fair or at a Near North facility.
